Transition to School
Starting school is a big milestone, and we want every child to approach it with confidence, excitement and a strong sense of self. Our transition to school programme builds the skills, independence and dispositions children need to make a positive and confident start to their school journey.
Transition to School Programme
Our transition to school programme is woven naturally into everyday life at The Junction. Through play, group experiences, conversations and practical routines, children develop the confidence to communicate, listen, take responsibility, solve problems and navigate new experiences. We focus on the whole child, recognising that being ready for school is about much more than knowing letters and numbers.
As children approach school, we intentionally support the development of independence, resilience and social confidence. Children practise managing their belongings, caring for themselves, following routines, participating in group experiences, expressing their needs and working collaboratively with others. We also nurture the curiosity, persistence and love of learning that will support them well beyond their first day of school.
Early Literacy
We build strong early literacy foundations through meaningful, everyday experiences. Children are encouraged to develop a love of books and stories, recognise their names and familiar letters, explore sounds and rhymes, and express their ideas through conversation, drawing, mark-making and early writing. We nurture confident communicators who are excited to share their thoughts, listen to others and make meaning from the world around them.
Early Numeracy
Mathematical thinking is woven naturally into children’s play and daily experiences. Children explore counting, number recognition, patterns, shapes, measurement, sorting and problem-solving through hands-on experiences that make learning purposeful and enjoyable. Rather than simply learning numbers by rote, we encourage children to notice, question, experiment and use mathematical thinking in real-life situations.
Social & Emotional Skills
Feeling confident and comfortable within a group is an important part of starting school. We support children to build friendships, communicate their needs, listen to others, take turns, negotiate, manage emotions and resolve problems. Through everyday interactions and supported social experiences, children develop empathy, resilience and the confidence to participate, contribute and form positive relationships with their new teachers and classmates.
Working in Partnership
We work in partnership with children, whānau and local schools to make the transition as smooth and positive as possible. Where appropriate, we support children to become familiar with what school may look and feel like, while celebrating the individual journey of each child. Our goal is for children to leave The Junction feeling confident in who they are, capable of meeting new challenges and excited about what comes next.
